The popular name of this historically blessed place is Santorini, which was named by Latin empire with reference to Saint lrene in 13th century. Santorini was created by the volcanic eruptions and is one of the few location having hot desert climate in Europe. Santorini generally experiences two seasons. April to October is the warm and dry season and the cold and rainy season lasts from November to March. The whole complex of crescent shaped Santorini Island is still an active volcano. According to history the islands that form Santorini came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activities. The most recent volcanic activity on the island occurred in 1950. The whole island is actually a huge natural geological and volcanological logical museum where you can observe a wide range of geological structures.

In Santorini there are few travel destinations that combine beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery, ancient cities, amazing restaurants, some of the world's best wine, and an active volcano. Amazing villages namely Fira, Oia, Karterádes, Emporió, Ammoúdi, Finikiá, Períssa, Perívolos, Megalohóri, Kamári, Messariá and Monólithos etc. has been constructed on the edge of this caldera, with Cycladic architecture and breathtaking view to the sea.
The major source of income for this island is tourism. There are many luxury apartments, hotels, resorts and villas available on rent. There are large beaches to enjoy a day in the sun. Kamari and Perissa are the best organized beaches and famous for their black sand, while particularly popular for the volcanic geology is the Red Beach. This is the reason that the island is famous for its beautiful and fabulous views of red and black sand beaches. The famous Red Beach is located on the southern side of the island. It distinguishes for the red sand and the red cliffs that surround this bay. Next to the Red Beach is the White Beach. The Santorini Island is also famous for its Cherry tomatoes ‘a traditional product’ which pleases your taste buds. A small wine industry produces a quality wine from the grapes grown on the volcanic soil of the island.

You can reach the Santorini Island by air and by sea as well. Flights take off from different cities and neighbor countries and lands on the Santorini National Airport located to the north of village Kamari. You can also take a ferry from Piraeus to the newly constructed port of Athinios on Santorini. If you take a high speed ferry from Piraeus it will take almost 4 to 5 hours to reach the Santorini port. Santorini has two ports Athinios port and Skala pier port the old one. The Skala pier port is used for cruise ships but the cruise ship may also tender the passengers to the new port of Athinios. Travelling by sea is also dependent on the weather. For safety and precautionary measures cruise ship main delay or suspend their operations for arrivals and departures.
